[ YOUR ADDRESS ] [FIRST NAME AND SURNAME OF MP ] MP for [ CONSTITUENCY ] House of Commons London SW1A 0AA Dear [ NAME OF MP ], I am writing with my concerns about road pricing (tolls) and the possible privatisation of England’s main roads, both made more likely by the recent Infrastructure Act. The Coalition Agreement ruled out tolls and any preparation for tolls in this Parliament, but this promise expires with the coming General Election. Like many other voters, I am strongly opposed to being charged tolls for using these roads. Motorists already pay over £50 billion a year in taxes, however only around £10 billion of this is invested back on our roads. It would be adding insult to injury if tolls were also charged to use the road network paid for several times over by the public. Tolls would increase delivery costs, pushing up the price of goods in shops and aggravating inflation and the rise in public transport fares. Almost everyone would lose. Tolls will push drivers off our safest roads (motorways) and other main roads that are likely to be gritted in winter and onto lower grade roads. This can only increase local congestion and accidents. England’s roads have been paid for several times over by the public so should remain in public ownership and management. They should not be hived-off and exploited for profit, either through outright privatisation or some kind of lease-off which would keep them public in name only. We have suffered years of under-investment in spite of excessive motoring taxation, so in fairness, new roads have already been paid for in advance. There is absolutely no need to toll them. Can I count on your support, please, for opposing any form of road pricing or privatisation? Yours faithfully, [SIGNATURE & NAME]
