I wish to object to the draft Mayor’s Transport Strategy proposals, particularly their generally mean attitude towards motorists This is based on prejudice rather than reasoning. For instance take the claim that any amount of walking to a bus stop or station, however short, can be an important part of staying healthy. By the same logic, so should a motorist walking to a car which might be a greater distance. Walking to your car can make you healthy. However you come out with the sweeping nonsense that health problems are due to an overdependence on cars. Driving does not cause obesity, as some mistakenly believe, it actually uses up some calories. The idea that car journeys should be discouraged if they are not 'essential' is amazing. The proposal to make councils consider a Workplace Parking Levy – a tax on going to work - is particularly offensive. Other journeys for shopping and visiting are part of our well being and helps the economy. Using a car can be much more efficient than other forms of transport, when you consider things like cost, time, convenience and safety. However the feelings of ordinary people don't matter to the blinkered interests behind the proposals. They are either biased against car use or want to make money out of motorists. They simply live on another planet from the rest of us. I object to any proposals to reallocate road space away from cars. Much of our problem with congestion in London has been due to flat earthers taking away road space for politicised reasons. A good example is the pedestrianisation of Trafalgar Square which increased congestion for miles around. Transport for London had assured everyone they had done their calculations and everything would be alright. I object to the idea that local councils should be required to push us out of our cars through traffic reduction measures. Public transport is already overcrowded, yet the plan seems to be to want an unnecessarily large population increase. This will just increase the pressure on public transport and road space. I object to the alternative, which would force councils to consider some extension of the Congestion Charge. When he was after our votes last year, Sadiq Khan promised he would just maintain the Congestion Charge at its current level. He is clearly not to be trusted. We don't want any extra taxes or charges. He said he would be a Mayor for all Londoners. He is turning out to be one who is prejudiced against motorists. He spouts the nonsense that streets are for people not cars. People use cars as part of their everyday lives. He must accept that. We should not be denied the use of the road because of gesture politics such as car-free days and road closures for their own sake. I also object to any plans to reduce the availability of car parking or make it more difficult or expensive. Any new cycle, car club or electric vehicle spaces should be in addition to existing parking spaces. I couldn't find any alternative proposals that don't penalise motorists. Please go back to the basics and consult motorists as to what they actually want.
