I wish to object to the draft Mayor’s Transport Strategy proposals, particularly proposals that make car parking difficult and penalise car use. The proposal to make councils consider a Workplace Parking Levy – a tax on going to work - is particularly bad. Why should people be penalised for going to work? Other journeys for shopping and visiting are also part of our well being. Using a car has the advantages of cost, time, convenience and safety. However it seems that the feelings of ordinary people don't matter to the biased minority behind the proposals, one that simply lives on another planet from the rest of us. I object to any plans to reduce the availability of private car parking. Any new car club, electric vehicle or cycling spaces should be in addition to existing parking spaces. I object to any plans to reduce the availability or convenience of car parking at stations, including drop off and pick up points. You should be making it easier for people to connect with public transport, not harder. I object to discriminatory parking charges as particularly daft. Any vehicle parked with its engine turned off won’t have any emissions. I object to any proposals for car-free and car-lite developments, which deliberately deny people car parking space. As people need to use cars, they will just increase pressures in surrounding areas.
